League Intelligence

The standings say who has won. This page says who has played well, who the draw has been kind to, and how hard each road has been — none of it using anybody’s win-loss record as an input.

Who is actually strongest?

Power Index

How is this calculated?

A descriptive measure of how well each team has played, with wins, losses and the Yahoo standings left out on purpose — a record already contains the schedule, and separating the two is the point. All-play 45%, scoring 35%, recent form 20%. With 1 week played there is not yet a meaningful "recent" — form is left out and its weight shared between the other two, giving 56% / 44%.

Performance without the schedule

All-play and median

All-play replays each week against all eleven other teams instead of the one you drew, so a week contributes eleven results rather than one. The median record asks the simpler question of whether you cleared the middle of the league. Both ignore who you actually played.

Who has been lucky or unlucky?

Matchup fortune

Nothing supernatural, and nothing about anyone’s decisions: this is the gap between the result the schedule handed you and the result your score deserved against a typical opponent. A week is scored outcome − expected win %, so winning with a 20% share is +0.80 and losing with a 90% share is −0.90.

Luckiest single win

B&B 2 beard 2 bald, week 1

97.12 beat Hátún Hustlers’s 89.44 — a score that would only have beaten 2 of the other 11 teams that week.

Unluckiest single loss

Red River Rangers, week 1

131.06 lost to Búðardalur Brawlers’s 164.66 — a score that would have beaten 7 of the other 11 teams that week.

How hard has the road been?

Strength of schedule

Points against rewards nothing but the calendar — 120 points conceded can be the week’s best score or its worst. What made a week hard is where the opponent finished relative to that week’s league, so that is what this measures. The percentile leaves the team being measured out of the comparison, otherwise scoring badly yourself would make your own schedule look tougher.

Bar height is the opponent’s percentile that week — how much of the rest of the league it outscored, ignoring this team. Taller is a harder week. Colour is the result.

Where the points come from

Positional strength

Every team’s league rank at each position, from starters only. Points are attributed to the player’s own position, so a running back started in the flex counts as RB rather than as a position of its own — filing flex points under “FLEX” would make every RB total wrong and treat a hole in the lineup as if it were a position.

Rank is the headline because points are not comparable across positions: a good week from a kicker and a good week from a running back are different numbers. An em dash means the team has never started that position, which is not the same as ranking last.

Who manages their lineup best?

Lineup decisions

Points left on the bench is a scold, not a statistic — forty points benched in a game won by sixty cost nothing. The column that matters is games cost: losses the best legal lineup would have won, counted separately from losses that were beyond any lineup.

Games a lineup decision actually decided

  • Mix´n Olaves lost to Kópavogur Milfhunters in week 1

    Started 60.40 against 106.90; the best legal lineup scored 110.90. Jalen Coker (29.8) for Ja'Marr Chase (2.2) in the WR slot would have done it alone.

Biggest bench regret

Mix´n Olaves, week 1

50.50

Started 60.40 from a roster that could legally have produced 110.90 — which would have won the game.

Best single swap not made: Jalen Coker (29.8) for Ja'Marr Chase (2.2) in the WR slot.

Hindsight is free and nobody sets a lineup knowing which running back is about to fumble. This is here as analytics, not as an accusation.

No unexplained numbers

How this page is calculated

All-play record

Each week, every team is replayed against all eleven others. With twelve teams a week produces eleven results instead of one, which is why all-play settles down far faster than a win-loss record does. Tied scores count as half a win.

allPlayPct = (wins + ties / 2) / games

Expected wins and luck

A week’s all-play share is also the chance of beating an opponent drawn at random from the league, so summing it gives the wins a team would expect from a neutral schedule. Luck is the difference. Summed over a season the weekly figures telescope into exactly this number, so the two can never disagree.

weeklyLuck = outcome − expectedWinPct   (win 1, tie 0.5, loss 0)
seasonLuck = actualWins − expectedWins = Σ weeklyLuck

Median record

The league’s middle score each week. With twelve teams there is no single middle team, so the median is the midpoint of the 6th and 7th scores — which means a team can only tie it when those two are themselves equal. An exact tie counts as half a win.

medianWin = score > median ? 1 : score < median ? 0 : 0.5

Opponent percentile

How much of the league your opponent outscored in the week you played them. The team being measured is left out of that comparison: if it were included, scoring badly yourself would raise your opponent’s percentile and your schedule would look hard precisely because you played badly.

opponentPercentile = (teams the opponent beat + ties / 2) / (teams − 2)

Power Index

All-play at 45%, scoring at 35% and recent form at 20%, each on a 0-100 scale. Scoring is scaled between the league’s weakest and strongest average rather than into standard deviations, because a standard deviation estimated from a handful of weeks is unstable enough that one big week would redraw the table. Recent form is left out until three weeks exist and its weight is shared between the other two in proportion.

index = 0.45 × allPlay + 0.35 × scoring + 0.20 × form

Positional strength

Starter points grouped by the player’s own position rather than by the slot he filled. A running back started in the flex scored his points as a running back; filing them under "FLEX" would make every running-back total wrong and would treat a hole in the lineup as though it were a position. Bench points are excluded, and a position a team has never started shows an em dash rather than a zero.

Games cost by a lineup decision

A loss where the best legal lineup from that week’s roster would have outscored the opponent’s submitted score. The comparison is deliberately one-sided: the opponent played the lineup they played, and imagining they had also been perfect would answer a question nobody asked. Losses no legal lineup could have won are counted separately, because the two are not the same failure.

gamesCost = losses where optimalPoints > opponentScore

What this is not

None of it is a prediction. The Power Index describes games already played; it says nothing about next week, and no component is fitted, tuned or learned. Yahoo’s standings rank and each team’s record are deliberately excluded from every figure on this page except the columns explicitly labelled "actual", which are there for contrast.

Everything above is recomputed from the ingested weekly results every time the site builds. There is no model, no estimate and no language model in the pipeline; a statistic whose input is missing is left out rather than filled in. Sample size after 1 week is small — the ordering will move a lot early in a season, and that is a property of the season, not of the maths.

Reading it all together: Better Call Pearsall leads the Power Index on 100.0, with an all-play record of 11-0 and an actual record of 1-0.
